Providing insight into county’s poverty

October 25, 2012 Leave a Comment

Haliburton Echo- Published October 22, 2012

They’ve got their work cut out for them.

Trent University students in Mark Skinner’s health geography class came to Haliburton Oct. 17 to learn about the poverty in the county. Four local anti-poverty workers met them and discussed the challenges in the Highlands – from no public transportation to seasonal low-income jobs to lack of inexpensive healthful food.

The students are to bring back examples of how food insecurity problems are being addressed in other parts of the world.

Haliburton Echo – Published Sept 12, 2012

In the midst of dying, a focus on living can be an unexpected gift.

Contrary to what you might think, hospice services is about life and learning to be present in the moment, manager of the Haliburton program Marilyn Rydberg says.

“It’s about living as fully as you can,” she says.

Rydberg is about to head into another training season for her volunteer team through SIRCH Community Services.

Grant money to connect people with food

August 10, 2012 Leave a Comment

Haliburton Echo- Published August 6, 2012

What we eat has a lot to do with what our parents ate; the choices we make, good or bad, often depend on what we’ve been exposed to in our youth.

For years, SIRCH Community Services has been helping local families make choices that include good, whole foods through its programs for parents and the Community Kitchen in Haliburton. With the addition of a $30,000 grant from the province, the organization will this year be able to provide much more.

“Part of the funding will go to exposing families to our local growers and farmers,” says Daniela Pagliaro, SIRCH’s new manager of community resilience programs.
