Cook It Up!

Season 3 of Cook It Up training began at the end of January 2017. The program, funded by City of Kawartha Lakes Social Services, trains individuals in food services. Nine fortunate individuals enjoy the opportunity to gain experience in shopping, menu planning, food preparation and cooking in a restaurant, as well as in serving and customer relations. The program rans two days a week for 16 weeks, and on Mondays in the spring, Cook It Up invited the public to join our group of trainees for a free 3-course lunch at Baked & Battered Restaurant in Haliburton. (Our thanks to Colby Marcellus and Craig Gordon, owners of Baked & Battered, for sharing their restaurant with SIRCH for this program.)

The community got to know these trainees and supported them through their Cook It Up journey. Lunch was provided every Monday for 10 weeks at our partner restaurant, Baked & Battered in Haliburton. You can see below what each “trainee-of-the-week” planned and prepared for the feature menu. (Each week’s menu was added on the Friday before the Monday lunch.)

In 2017, to help celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary, lunches were themed on one of the provinces or territories. The Trainees cooked 60 healthy, delicious 3-course meals each week on a first come first served basis, with no take-out. Everyone who has previously experienced a Cook It Up lunch raves about the food and the atmosphere. Donations for lunch were not expected but were gratefully accepted.
