Charitable Food Initiatives
The non-profit SIRCH Bistro & Bakery offers affordable nutritious breakfasts and lunches, as well as fresh baked breads and treats in Haliburton Village. Local produce is used whenever possible.
Some innovative partnerships have evolved. For example, our Artisan Baker picks up spent grain used in the brewing process from Haliburton Brewery, and makes it into delicious sourdough bread. The brewery then purchases the bread to use on their charcuterie boards.
The Bistro hosts various events and can be booked for meetings and events. In one end of the Bistro, we have a mini-Thrift Warehouse, to show customers the great variety and quality of goods that we have in the much larger store in Industrial Park.
The Bistro has two programs that address food insecurity, and isolation: Community Kitchen, and Lunch Is On Us. 705-457-1700
Need Food Support?
A new shared website—created by local food banks across Haliburton County—makes it easier to find food support when you need it. Whether you’re looking for the closest location or more information about available services, www.FoodBanksHaliburtonCounty.ca is a helpful resource for individuals and families. If you or someone you know needs food, visit the site to learn more.
Community Kitchen
Community Kitchen brings volunteers together at the Bistro on Mondays when it is closed to the public. Volunteers gather, and together with the chef they prepare thousands of nutritious meals annually. The meals are frozen and then distributed through health, community service and non-profit housing organizations in Haliburton County and North Hastings. (Prepared meals are essential for those with lack of cooking skills, food insecurity, challenges with mental health, addictions, or illness, as well as those who are homeless, frail or elderly.
Generous farmers, gardeners and growers as well as food banks and grocers donate significant amounts of produce to help the program. Community Kitchen is funded entirely through donations and fundraising.
Once a week from November to March SIRCH offers Lunch Is On Us, a full meal at no charge at the Bistro. Everyone is welcome -- it’s our way of saying thanks to a generous community. It also offers a way for food insecure community members to eat out, and for anyone feeling isolated or alone to join in the fun and meet other people. People love that local musicians will often donate a couple of hours of their time to play during lunch. Lasting friendships have been made at Lunch Is On Us.
Applesauce Project
The Applesauce Project is an annual event where property owners will pick wild apples on their property and bring them in to the
Bistro. Then Community Kitchen volunteers converge for a special day where apples are cooked, sieved and made into servings of applesauce or apple crisps. Those are handed out free to recipients of our Community Kitchen meals, who can use more fruit in their diets.

Gena is SIRCH’s founding Executive Director, and for 36 years she has helped shape the heart, direction, and values of the organization. Her deep knowledge of the community (she grew up here) and commitment to reducing vulnerability and levelling the playing field are part of what makes SIRCH trusted and respected.
As SIRCH’s founding Executive Director, Gena carries both the history and the hope — honouring where we’ve been while thoughtfully shaping what comes next.
It might surprise you to know that Gena is a big-picture thinker. She sees possibilities, patterns, and connections — often before there’s a clear path or funding in place.
Over the years, she’s weathered both rewarding and difficult seasons with care, integrity, and a commitment to taking the high road. That steady approach continues to shape SIRCH’s culture, relationships, and impact.
She also knows it takes a team, and often a community. "I’m profoundly grateful for the incredible staff, volunteers, and community partners who have walked this journey by my side -- it's the only way it could be successful.”
